You have the choice of six tours in this fantastically varied country. Whether in the Veneto region, in Umbria, in Latium, Apulia or in Sardinia you'll enjoy not only time-tested quality Rotalis routes but a cultural heritage of refined beauty. Nearly all routes were plotted in the open landscape since usable map material is rare. As a result, most of each tour, with the exception of the approaches to the cities, follows country roads with little traffic, no small feat in this car-crazy country. We often ride on gravel paths however, so you should be comfortable on a bike and have good control. Rotalis has chosen the best trip dates for maximum enjoyment of the Italian climate. In Sardinia and Apulia spring starts eight weeks earlier than in northern Europe, in Umbria and Latium approximately six weeks earlier, and in Veneto about four weeks earlier. The autumn is often most beautiful starting in mid-October.
Southern Tuscany and Umbria (Route I)
This tour leads you into the "green heart of Italy" where you'll fall under the spell of this region, as have innumerable Rotalis guests in the last 18 years. You'll experience one of the most beautiful regions of central Italy, and one of the richest cultural landscapes on the Appian Peninsula, where lonely low mountains alternate with wide plains. Here you'll find peace and isolation in a splendid and colorful natural setting, the charm of medieval town and city architecture which has maintained it's original character, and above all, unforgettable works of art.
Sardinia (Route J)
Phoenician temples, necropolises and Tephatim, karstic caves and evergreen maccia. Dramatic steep cliffs plunging into the turquoise sea. Endless beaches against a backdrop of unspoiled nature. A trip through bewitching and fascinating pristine landscapes.
Apulia (Route K)
Between the Adriatic and Ionian seas. Extensive karstic plains and olive groves, stalactite caves, Trulli, Greek temples and cliff cities, Norman domes and the "stone crown of Apulia." A voyage into the land of Frederick II.
Veneto (Route LB)
Lagoons, canals, endless levels and a magical villa culture. From magnificent cities such as Viceza, Padua and Asolo in the "Terraferma" and Venice, the "Serenissima" to "risi bisi," Grappa and Prosecco - a trip through the heartland of Veneto.
Friuli - Trieste (Route LC)
Although millions of tourists travel to Italy every year, with the exception of the Adriatic coast, few explore Friuli or the Trieste region. What serendipity for the few who do. Our small group travels nearly undisturbed through one of most beautiful, historically interesting and culturally rich areas of central Europe.
Alto Adige - Trentino (Route LD)
Piedmont (Small & Splendid cycle tour: PA)
This tour leads you into a region apt to delight your senses, from Turin into the heart of the Piedmont. Constantly changing panoramic views as far as the Western Alps. Roman churches hidden in Monferrato’s green hills, proud castles and picturesque villages in the rolling hills of the Langhe. Barolo and Barbaresco, Nebbiolo and Dolcetto – wine, truffles and culinary treats in a region that satisfies any gourmet’s desire.
